Sean and Cameron
Sean was born in September 2004. At just a few months of age, we noticed Sean was not moving around and progressing as much as our first born child. We worked with our doctor and had him evaluated. During this time, Sean had surgery to remove cysts from his throat, his extra finger removed, and tubes put in his ear. He also had several MRI's and numerous blood tests. At a year old, he was diagnosed with brain damage (Cerebral Palsy) caused by a lack of oxygen at birth. A year later we saw a developmental doctor who diagnosed Sean with a severe form of autism. |

At this time, we were 7 months pregnant with our third child--Sean's baby brother, Cameron. During the pregnancy, I had numerous ultrasounds, as the doctors were concerned about Cameron's enlarged kidneys. In January 2007, Cameron was born. He had an ultrasound immediately following his birth. We were so thankful that he was alive and his kidneys were functioning despite their size. We were referred to the pediatric Nephrologist at our local children's hospital.

At our first visit, the doctor asked not only about Cameron, but our other children as well. He told us that he is married to a genetics doctor and that he wanted us to see her immediately. Within a week we had brought the children to the geneticist and she gave two of our children the BBS diagnosis. After the diagnosis, the battery of tests on our boys got even more intense. It seems as if they had every test under the sun performed on them. Within just of few weeks of the diagnosis, Cam had major surgery to correct a malrotation of his bowels. He also had surgeries to remove cysts from his throat, had his extra toe removed, and had tubes put in his ears.
(June 2008) While both boys exhibit most of the BBS characteristics, their older sister Kelly does not have any of the BBS characteristics. Sean's kidneys are small and multicystic. He is now 3½ years and has recently learned to walk. He is 52 pounds. He has a few signs to communicate but is nonverbal. There was no sign of the RP at his last eye exam. He just finished his first year in special needs preschool. Cameron is 17 months old and 30 pounds. He has enlarged and multicystic kidneys. He is extremely near sighted but thankfully, no sign of the RP. Cam has bladder reflux and his digestive system still gives him problems. Sean & Cam have renal ultrasounds every six months along with the usual bloodwork. They both love the Backyardigans and Diego. Sean loves to swing and bounce. He is beginning horseback riding and swim therapy for the summer along with his usual PT, OT, & ST. Cameron?s favorite game is Peek-a-boo. He also has OT & ST. They are happy and loving life!
