He was born with crooked feet and wore corrective shoes from
6
months of age until he turned 2. He started walking at 15 months.
Phillip had
physical
therapy on his legs for "tight muscles", he was quite uncoordinated as a child.
He
was in the 4th grade before he wore glasses or had his eyes checked. At this time he
was
found to be very nearsighted.
He was on a diet most of his life. His top
weight
was 315 pounds in about 1980.
Many doctors told him he would die of obesity by age
30.
At age 30, Phillip married. He weighed 280 or 290 pounds then. With the help of his
wife,
he lost down to 219 pounds. Weight continues to be a struggle for him, however, he can
gain
or lose 15 pounds in 1 or 2 days. Phillip now weighs 276 pounds and is 6 feet 5.5 inches
tall
.
In 1988, Phil found out he had rod and cone dystrophy. This was the first time he had
ever
seen an ophthalmologist. He was sent to San Francisco, CA to see the doctor and it was
recommended that he see a geneticist, they suspected LMBBS at this time.
Because of
problems with the insurance company, (because no pregnancy had yet resulted of the
marriage) they would not pay for a genetic work-up.
They at last found a doctor
who
told them what they needed to know to have the work-up, and they had keriotypes, foot
x-rays
, hearing test, kidney ultrasound, and genetic consultation.
They were told that while
it was
all right for them to try to have children, it was probable that Phillip was infertile because
of the
syndrome.
Phillip drove a car until 1992. He works for the State of California Board of
Equalization
as a tax tech.
He has special equipment to adapt his job to his needs, such as a 20
inch
computer screen, CCTV, and a computer enlargement program. He currently is President
of
the California Counsel for the Blind, Orange county chapter, which is part of the
American Counsel
for the blind.
Phillip has had bouts of high blood pressure, an aortic valve prolapse, and high
triglicerides.
He has not had high cholesterol. His cardiologist has suggested the Zones diet which he
has
just begun.
He takes several medications, Naprosyn for joint problems, Zyloprin for high
uric
acid, Kolestrin for high triglicerides
( which has worked wonderfully!)
Phillip also has a guide dog, Ben.
Phil is married and has two wonderful adopted children.
